Wildlife trust asks people to listen for 'bittern boom'

The Somerset Wildlife Trust is asking people to listen to hear the boom of a bittern as it tries to track them for a study.

The distinctive boom of the male can be heard up to two miles (3.2km) away.

Kevin Anderson, from the trust, says they are "very secretive" and difficult to spot among the reeds they often make their home in.

The public are being asked to let the trust know if they hear the boom, as it wants to know where the bitterns go when they leave nature reserves.
